Remote Desktop Licensing Diagnoser checks the wrong Licensing Server

$

We have started using Server 2016 as RDS session hosts and we had to create a new Server 2016 licensing server as the session hosts require a Server 2016 as well.

I have created the new licensing 2016 server, activated it, added it to the AD group of terminal server licensing , added licenses.

Then I added the new server as the RD license server of the RD deployment and chose 'per user" licensing mode. There is no other RD license server listed in the configuration or in the server list in server manager. I can confirm that with powershell command:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-RDLicenseConfigurationMode                 LicenseServer----                 -------------PerUser             {HostRDL2016.XYZ.com}

When I run RD Licensing Diagnoser, the server that is diagnosed is the old server (Server 2012), not the one I created.

How can I fix this?

Rebuilding a Windows Remote Desktop Licensing Server

We currently have a Windows 2012 R2 RDS Licensing server in our environment.  I would like to build a new Windows 2016 RDS Licensing server to replace the 2012 R2 Licensing server.  I would like to use the same server name and IP address for the new server.  I am trying to figure out the easiest way to do this.  Am I able to activate the 2016 server and then rename and re-IP the server afterwards?  I've been searching and I cannot find the cleanest way to transition.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Other information - the licenses are all RDS Per User CALs with Software Assurance.

See what application users have open on RDS

Hi All,

So we currently have a collection on our 2012 RDS infrastructure where we have 10 applications published to business.

I just want to find out if there is a means in which I can determine which application the users currently have open? The reason for this is we need to do a deployment to one of the published applications back-end application servers and need to ensure no users are connected to that specific application.

At the moment I have a total of 254 connections, yet I cannot determine if they are accessing App-1, App-2, App-3 etc.

Thanks,

RDS Server 2012 Per Device CAL Issue

Hello,

I am having issues with Per User Device CALs on Server 2012R2 when users remote desktop to the machine

We use the setup in a very simple manner. PC's connect to the server and run 1 of 3 programs. They have the ability to print. The printer is being shared from another PC, and every PC will print to a different printer.

The issue is that the same PC is being assigned multiple device CALs when connecting via RDS. I have read that a printer needs a device CAL which is fine so I would expect to see 2 CALs being used per PC.

I found out that as we built from the same gold image the hardwareID would be identical, which it was, which would cause problems. We have deleted / re-created the HardwareID on each of the machines so they are now unique. We then deleted re-created the entire licensing database so we could start again from scratch to make sure everything was normal.

Machines are being assinged a CAL on their second connect which is fine. However they are then constantly being assinged a temporary CAL on subsequent connects. Sometimes these CALs are being converted to permanent CALs again and certain devices are now back up to taking 3 CALs. I assume this list is going to continue to grow.

I cannot see why mutliple CALs are being taken now for devices. Can anyone provide some advice ?

Thanks

Remote desktop collection is missing properties I would like to add

Hello everyone,

I am using Server 2012 Datacenter in a VMware environment. What I am trying to do is have one of our Remote Desktop collections, when clicked on through RD Web Access, already have the computer name and the RD gateway server when open/launched (custom .rdp file).

I have seen articles saying in 2008 server you could do this through a GUI, but with Server 2012, Server Manager doesn't allow you to add the custom properties I am looking for. Instead, it is suggested, well implied, to use powershell. Below are the options I'd like to add but while trying to use powershell, I receive the overly posted, "You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression." At looking at the Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration command, no where on the page does it say it returns an object/value/something, and all variables I pass accept strings. I know I am missing something but I am unsure what. Here is a how I am trying to use the above command:

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName "Faculty" -CustomRdpProperty "full address:s:Server.SomeDomain.ORG"

Below are several other properties I'd like to add where I have found that by adding `n in between commands, it should work, but I wanted to start with one property before jumping ahead. In addition, I'd like to add a custom certificate but that isn't as important as getting the computer name and default gateway addresses to show up, and not have the end user type it in.

gatewayusagemethod:i:2
gatewayprofileusagemethod:i:1
gatewaycredentialssource:i:0
full address:s:Server.SomeDomain.ORG
gatewayhostname:s:Server.SomeDomain.org

I appreciate everyone for reading this and look forward to any help and/or insight. I had links to articles/technet but because my account is not verified yet, I couldn't link to them. If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to assist.

Sincerely,

Mike

Could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for template name

Hello

I have :

3 x physical Server 2016 as hyper V host
1 x Virtual Server 2016 as Broker and Web access
40 x Windows 10 entreprise 1803 as Virtual desktop collection pooled. It was working very well with UPD (User profile disk) on a SOFS share.

Last week I create a new user and he can't get his new UPD working.
I decide to clean a lot of things : I remove the collection and try to create a new one.

When I choose my VM template (Wich work well since long time) I get the error :

could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for MasterW10c

I enable log, and searcg with Dbgview :

Composant RdmsUI : Exception occurred in IsMasterVMPrerequisiteSatisfied for VM MasterW10c, VMHost CLOUD2.cxxat.com. Exception details: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: à System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)

I can't post processmon sreenshot because my account is not verified but search "could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for" on G00GLE and i post it on first spiceworks result

I try to deploy from any of my 3 Host -> same problem
I remove all remote desktop host role and remote desktop broke +web and reinstall them -> same problem
I install another broker + web access on another 2016 server (on the AD :-( ) -> same problem

I don't know when this problem appear (I found it when i add a new user. One of our last change is installation of Acronis Backup to backup some VM/shared drive. I uninstall Acronis from all our machine and nothing change. I do some Windows Update.

Thanks

KB4503294 affecting Wyse 3040 thin clients only in RDS Environment (Serv 2016)

Also affects Wyse Thin Os 5070 - but NOT older T series thin clients or original branded Wyse Clients

Before anyone asks - Yes I have a case open with Microsoft, and Dell. Both are pointing the finger at each other and we're going nowhere.

After My posts on patch Tuesday where we determined that KB4503267 was killing Wyse 3040 thin clients (And only wyse 3040 thin clients) we've now determined that KB4503294 is causing this also.

Configuration example:

A single Remote Desktop Connection is configured. The hostname is pointing to internal hostname of server e.g. remote1, and the use TS gateway setting is checked, with the TS gateway pointed to gateway.contoso.com

Symptom: When a user attempts to login the login window on the thin client disappears for a moment and then re-appears

Event log does not show anything useful or conclusive either on the thin client or Windows Security log. All windows security log says is "error during logon". I'll add a complete extract as soon as the box comes back up.

I'm at a loss (And so is everyone else apparently) as to why only the dell 3040's are affected. Even the earlier Wyse T series thin clients are fine and Microsoft can't give me any answers nor can Dell

On Server 2012 we found that Preview updates KB4503295, KB4503277, caused this.

Edit: I previously typed that KB503886, KB4503865 affected this - That information is incorrect and these were not installed on the servers impacted this morning

We also found that non preview updates KB4503263 AND KB4503276 when combined caused this issue.

I was also able to confirm that this affects firmware version 8.6_024 & 8.6_013

An example of the Event log from a failed user logon (with some redactions)

Windows 2016 Start Menu customization using GPO

$

Hi,

We are setting up several Windows 2016 RDS environments and are getting requests from customers to remove all of the tiles from the start menu.

There are a few guides I have found online to do this, ususally involves removing the tiles from a test machine, exporting the start menu layout on that machine thru Powershell, putting it on a share, then setting up a GPO to use the 'Start Layout File' and use the share\xml.

I've tried this and it seems to apply the GPO however it is not removing any tiles.

Here is the XML code:

<LayoutModificationTemplate Version="1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification"><LayoutOptions StartTileGroupCellWidth="6" /><DefaultLayoutOverride><StartLayoutCollection><defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout" /></StartLayoutCollection></DefaultLayoutOverride></LayoutModificationTemplate>

Anyone know what I might be doing wrong? Some of the examples I have seen have some tiles replaced, but I want to remove ALL tiles. I'm not sure if the start menu requires at least some tiles in order for this to work. but I want to remove all tiles.

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 - RD Virtualization Host feature missing

I'm trying to use Hyper-V Server 2019 as a virtualization host.  This fails.

I have 3 computers;

  1. domain controller
  2. Windows Server 2019, which will be RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access
  3. Hyper-V Server 2019, which will be RD Virtualization Host

When I attempt to install this using Server Manager, RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access installation succeeds, but RD Virtualization Host fails.

Investigating further, the feature is missing! Here's some PowerShell, confirming I am running Hyper-V Server 2019 (downloaded today, 3 July 2019), and the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host feature simply not there!

According to Using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 for VDI – Matthijs's blog I would have expected to something like this, clearly showing "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host" as a component;

But that doesn't appear on Hyper-V Server 2019.

Hence...

Add-WindowsFeature –Name RDS-Virtualization

...simply doesn't work.

How do install "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host" on Hyper-V Server 2019?

Strange TCP connections on server

Hi,

Our SQL Server become very slow. While trying to figure it out where is the problem I noticed strange TCP connections on Resource Monitor. While nobody from outside our LAN is connected to our server I see many connections from (or to) these remote addresses:

45.227.255.152, 194.61.24.95, 185.156.177.235, 193.188.22.13

All of them are related to svchosts.exe(termsvcs), local port is 3389, remote ports are high. All those connections are greyed out. Is it OK? What all those connections means? Does anybody trying to attack our server?

I have checked server for viruses but found nothing.

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

Windows 2016 RDS event 1306 Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user... Error: NULL

I'm attempting to setup a Windows 2016 RDS Standard Deployment for Session Hosting.  The layout is as follows:
RDS01 - RDS Connection Broker and Web Access
TS02 - RDS Session Host
TS03 - RDS Session Host

The domain these servers are part of has (1) Windows 2008 Server and (2) Windows 2016 Servers acting as DCs.  The domain is running at Windows 2003 Functional Level.

All servers are on a single routed network with no firewall between them.  All DNS A and PTR records for all servers exist and resolve on all hosts.  All servers can be pinged by each other. In other words, there are no network connectivity issues.

I've setup the RDS deployment several times w/ the same results.

The Issue
I can login via the RDWeb interface on RDS01 from a Win10 desktop and connect to the published RDP desktop without issue (i.e. no error messages to the user) and no errors in the logs.  When I try to directly RDP to RDS01, I successfully authenticate as a user (per the event log) but get an error stating that the user doesn't have access to the system.  In the event log I get event id 1306 with the message of "Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user <domain>\<test user>.  Error: NULL".

If I RDP to RDS01 as an administrator, I get the same error message but the RDP session opens and presents the desktop on RDS01.

I can RDP directly to TS02 or TS03 and login as a user and open the RDP session.  Redirection to some degree appears to be working in that I can disconnect a user session from TS02 and RDP to TS03 and the session is redirected back to TS02.  The event logs on RDS01 record this happening as well.

In searching this event 1306 issue, I found several posts with this exact same behavior in WS 2012/R2.  Most "solutions" suggested point to the fact that the RDS Session Broker doesn't have sufficient authority to look up the users AD group membership via the tokenGroupsGlobalAndUniversal attribute or AuthzInitializeContextFromSid API function which leverages the tokenGroupsGlobalAndUniversal attribute.  (Example: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/29733a87-dbda-47bc-8b37-6eeac5ab5a0a/2012-rds-nonadministrators-can-not-access-vdi-pool?forum=winserverTS#97d883f1-7a64-4d02-9492-309638f92e79 )

The service is running as "Network Service" which does have network access via the Computer Object's authority in AD.  So following Microsoft's instructions (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/331951), I've added RDS01 to both the Windows Authorization Access Group and Pre-Windows 2000 Compatibility Access groups and rebooted RDS01 with the same results.

2. I've verified the Windows Authorization Access Group has rights to read the tokenGroupsGlobalAndUniversal property/attribute on my test users and the computer objects of the servers.

3. I've setup an AD Service account following Microsoft's instructions (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/842423) with a similarly described access issue.  The service account user was added to the Windows Authorization Access Group.  This was unsuccessfully as well w/ the same event 1306 error.

4. I ran the following powershell commands to verify access of the Connection Broker to the OU (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj215512.aspx#)

Test-RDOUAccess -Domain [redacted.domain] -OU "Computers" -ConnectionBroker rds01.[redacted.domain] -verbose

This failed so I ran the following to grant access

Grant-RDOUAccess -Domain watsons.local -OU "Computers" -ConnectionBroker rds01.watsons.local -verbose

The Test-RDOUAccess then succeeded.

I repeated this for the OUs that contained the users and the server computer objects.

I've disabled all GPOs to ensure there's no conflicts but have seen no change in the behavior or error messages.

With all that, I've exhausted every option that I can find to resolve this error to gain the expected functionality.  As a work around for the moment, I've setup a round-robin DNS A record that points to TS02 and TS03 w/ a very short TTL.  This gives the test users the ability to login and atleast test the desktop functionality.

Sorry for being so long winded with this but I thought it better to put all the cards on the table.

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thx!

A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist

Hi

I am trying to run a PowerShell command to add an application from a network share onto my Remote Desktop Server 2016. When I run the command, it shows the following:

New-RDRemoteApp : A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist on SR1RDS002.ad.collinsco.com. This operation
can be performed after creating a deployment. For information about creating a deployment, run "Get-Help
New-RDVirtualDesktopDeployment" or "Get-Help New-RDSessionDeployment".

The Remote Desktop Server is running and I have staff currently using the applications on it therefore do not understand why this is happening.

This is very frustrating as I have two applications that run from a Network share that I need to have published.

Can anyone please help me with this issue? Thanks

Hi guys,

Is there an easy way to migrate local user profiles on an remote desktop server to user profile disks? I am replacing a Server 2008 R2 and want to start using UPD's instead on a Server 2012 R2.

Best regards,

Hasan

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

Issue with one special RemoteApp

Hey everyone,

i am using an Windows Server 2016 to publish a few remote apps. All of them are working, except one.

The behaviour: When i try to log on (same if i use the rdp file or via Web Access) i get the prompt for the user and it says starting. I also get a confirmation in the task bar, that I am connecte with the Remote Server. After a few seconds the "starting window" disappears and nothing happens.

It's a Java application, but i have another Java application that is working.

That's what i found in the eventlog (TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager) on the Server:

> Begin Session arbitration...Session ID 5 > Session 5 has been disconnected, reason Code 0 > Session 4 has been disconnected, reason Code 5 > RDS: Session reconnection successfull Session ID 4 > End Session arbitration... Session ID5 > Session 4 has been disconnected by session 4 > %s from %s Session 4 has been disconnected, reason code 11 > RDS: Session has been disconnected...Session ID 4

Any Ideas?

Kind Regards, Matthias

Default Credentials Error after adding new RD Session Hosts

$

Here is a strange one:

Have a standard setup with the following:

  • RD Broker and RD WA on one server
  • 2 Session Hosts
  • 2 RemoteApp hosts

Setup SSO perfectly and all working as expected.

Then I realised the guy who setup the virtual machines set them up as Gen1 so could not have more than 1 processor due the tech on the host. Tried converting them using the MS PS script but failed.

Alas I had to create 2 new session hosts. After I removed the old session hosts and added the new session hosts, when connecting to the broker server to get allocated a session host, I now get the following error:

"Your System Administrator does not allow the use of DEFAULT credentials to log on to the remote computer

******.*******.co.uk because its identity is not fully verified"

Things I have tried:

  • Reapplying the cert to all roles
  • Restarting all servers
  • Allowing delegated creds using local group policy

Weirdly enough, if I connect via RDWeb or via Remote Resources feed it goes straight through.

It is very strange.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Windows 2016 RDS - Start Menu Not Working - get-appxpackage returns nothing

I'm having an issue on a single RDS 2016 server at the moment where the start menu doesn't open.

I've gone though lots of steps including sfc /scannow  (No errors)   DISM with all the options (No Errors)

I've cleared the Registry in firewall policy\restricted services\configurable\system.

I believe the issue is that I don't have any applications registered in the get-appxpackage at all, it just comes back blanks where as on working machines I get a list of about 15.

I've tried to install the packages by hand using variations of

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml -Verbose

This returns the following;

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered.
